Your first week in Australia
These are the seven things to sort out before anything else.
1. Tax File Number (TFN)
Apply online at the ATO website as soon as you arrive. You need a TFN to start working and to avoid being taxed at the maximum rate.
2. Health cover
- Students: you should already have OSHC arranged before your visa was granted.
- Skilled migrants on PR or eligible bridging visas: sign up for Medicare at any Service Centre.
- Working holiday and 482/485 visa holders: check whether you need private health insurance.
3. Bank account
Australia's "Big Four" (CBA, ANZ, NAB, Westpac) all let you open an account online before arrival. ING and Macquarie are popular fully-digital options.
4. SIM card
Aldi Mobile, Boost, and Amaysim sell prepaid SIMs at supermarkets. Telstra and Optus have stronger regional coverage if you'll travel outside cities.
5. Public transport card
- Sydney: Opal
- Melbourne: Myki
- Brisbane: Go card Most cities now accept tap-to-pay with a contactless debit/credit card.
6. Update your address
Let the Department of Home Affairs know if your address changes within 14 days. Update it in ImmiAccount.
7. Register with a GP
Get a regular GP (general practitioner) sorted before you need one. HotDoc and HealthEngine let you book online.
