Visitor visa (Subclass 600) — for parents
The Subclass 600 is the most common way for parents and family members to visit Australia.
Stay length
Most visitor visas are granted for 3, 6, or 12 months per visit. Multiple-entry visas are available for up to 5 years if you apply for the Sponsored Family or Tourist stream.
What to include
- Strong evidence of incentive to return home (job, property, family ties)
- Proof of funds — bank statements, tax returns, or a letter of support from you (the sponsor)
- Travel itinerary and return tickets (or evidence of intent to return)
- Health insurance for the duration of stay (mandatory if you're sponsoring)
How to maximise approval chances
- Apply early — at least 8–12 weeks before intended travel
- Provide a clear, dated cover letter explaining the purpose of the visit
- If you're a permanent resident or citizen, write a formal letter of invitation and attach proof of your status
- Health checks are required for stays over 3 months
Common refusal reasons
- Weak ties to home country (especially for older retirees)
- Insufficient funds shown in the bank statements
- Vague or generic statements of purpose
For a refusal-resistant application — and especially if a previous visa was refused — speak with a MARA-registered agent.
