From a 485 to permanent residency
The Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visa gives you 2–6 years of work rights after study. Most holders use this time to build the experience needed for permanent residency.
The main PR pathways
Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)
Fully points-tested. You don't need an employer or state to sponsor you. Highly competitive — minimum scores in popular occupations are well above the 65-point threshold.
Skilled Employer Sponsored (Subclass 186)
Your employer nominates you for a permanent position. Most accessible route for many international graduates.
Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190)
A state or territory government nominates you. Each state publishes an occupation list and may have additional residency requirements.
What to start preparing
- Get your occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List
- Have your skills assessment ready (e.g. ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering)
- English test results valid for 3 years
- Keep proof of all paid work — payslips, contracts, references
Timing matters
PR pathways change. Read the official Home Affairs page for your subclass and check with a registered MARA agent before committing to a plan.
